The Marine Researchers - in Pictures

Lough Hyne by Terri Kearney

Skibbereen Heritage Centre Paperback €15

A visual history of the scientific research carried out at Europe’s first Marine Nature Reserve. This book was launched at the end of May, 2011, at a special event for local people and members of the scientific research teams that had been involved with Lough Hyne.

Lough Hyne, (also spelt Ine), a salt-water lake situated 5 km south-west of Skibbereen in West Cork was first ‘discovered’ by marine biologists in 1886. It is now one of the most-studied marine habitats in the world and was designated as Europe’s first Marine Nature reserve in 1981.

This visual history, covering a time-span of over a century, features people who brought this remote lake to prominence in the scientific world against the backdrop of what was happening locally.

Photographs of scientific experiments and the day-to-day living of the researchers are juxtaposed with images of local people and events. As well as being a visual treat, these photographs record how this small lake became one of the world’s premier marine sites and features the exceptional people who brought this about.
